VTRS Hosts "Pancakes for Parents" for Family Day on Oct. 25
by David Weand

BLACKSBURG, Va., Oct. 17, 2009 -- Virginia Tech will be having their annual Family Weekend October 23-25, 2009. This is a weekend packed with activities designed to provide families of Virginia Tech students a chance to learn more about Virginia Tech and the opportunities provided to their students.

The Virginia Tech Rescue Squad and the VTRS Life Member and Alumni Association will be participating in the Family Day activities with a pancake breakfast on the Drillfield Sunday morning. The event will be catered by Chris Cakes, who provides a delicious breakfast with a side of humor and showmanship! The event is all-you-can-eat for only a $5 donation. We will be serving up this delectable dining beginning at 8:00am and going until 11:00am. We will be located under the white tent on the Drillfield near McBryde Hall.

All funds raised by this function will support the VTRSLMAA Active Member Scholarship which provides annual scholarships to members of the Virginia Tech Rescue Squad. This fund was created in 2008 and has quickly grown in size. Any donations above and beyond the initial $5 per plate are greatly appreciated. More information about how to donate is available on our website.

In addition to offering the opportunity for students to have breakfast with their family on the Drillfield, we will also have many of our vehicles and emergency equipment out for display. We welcome all students, family, faculty, media and community members to stop by and ask questions about the service we provide to the community. Quite often the only time we get to speak to people is during a medical emergency when more pressing matters are at hand. We want to take the opportunity to meet with our community in a less stressful environment.

When do I call for an ambulance?
Is the victim's condition life-threatening or could it worsen and become life threatening on the way to the hospital? Could moving the victim cause further injury? Does the victim need the skills or equipment of emergency medical technicians? Would distance or traffic conditions cause a delay in getting the victim to the hospital?
If the answer to any of these questions is "yes," or if you are unsure, it's best to call an ambulance. EMTs are trained to begin medical treatment on the way to the hospital and can alert the doctors of the patient's condition in advance.

Example warning signs:
Severe burns, bleeding that won't stop, severe or persistent vomiting, coughing up or vomiting blood, suicidal or homicidal feelings, difficulty breathing, chest or upper abdominal pain or pressure, fainting or sudden collapse, sudden dizziness, weakness or change in vision, change in mental status
